There was once a man who envisioned a beautiful thing--a church, built on his property, where the community could go and be free to worship God.  This man's name was Charles "Charlie" Greear, and unfortunately before he could see his dream become a reality on earth, he went home to be with Jesus.  His family knew of this vision, and donated the land for the church in memory of Charlie.

On a sunny, spring day in April 1980 a groundbreaking ceremony for what would then be known as Flatwoods Independent Baptist Church was held.  One can easily imagine Charlie watching from heaven as his dream was realized.  Due to the host of relatives and friends who participated in his project, work was almost complete in five months.  In August 1980, the first service was held, although the building had bare floors, no partitions and old seats.  God began blessing the little white church and has continued doing so for the past 24 years.

The little white church faced the hardships that often befall churches, but with the struggles came blessings.  In 1983, under the leadership of Pastor Eddie Sturgill, Flatwoods Independent Baptist Church was reorganized as Community Freewill Baptist Church.  Community had 22 charter members, nine o which still faithfully attend there.  After being established as CFWB, the church joined the Wise County Church Conference and God allowed his people to flourish.

The church was then shaped by another dream.  Wayne Perry--tired of having to wait until spring and summer to baptize people and sensing the need of room where the choir could stand--suggested the idea to add a choir loft and baptistery.  Buford Greear's only comment when he heard this suggestion was "Let's build it!"  Buford passed away before he could see the project completed, but his dynamic spirit still flows through the people whose lives he touched today.  The baptistery was ready for use, and was dedicated in memory of Buford T. Greear on March 14, 1990--Easter Sunday.
